Day 41 - Halifax, Nova Scotia

I'm so sorry that I'm a couple days behind, but our Wifi wasn't working which doesn't allow me to do my blog but I'm going to try to catch up today.  I will try to make this brief.

It is Tuesday, July 10th - our second day in Halifax.

We started our day out by driving to Peggy’s Cove on a tour bus.  On the way there we stopped at the Memorial for the Crash of Swissair Flight lll.  One of the stones has three cutout’s representing the Flight number.  Sharon and Wally, our travel friends were actually here when it happened.  They couldn’t see the crash as it was quite a ways out in the ocean but saw everything that happened on land. The fuel was dumped over the campground where they were staying. The scenery in this area is awesome.    This is what I’ve been waiting to see since we left.    Someone got a little carried away painting his house.

Peggy’s Cove is a very small working fishing village off the mouth of St. Margaret’s Bay.  Some say that is where they got the name.  Others tell a romantic story of a girl who was rescued from  a shipwreck and later married the young man that saved her.  William DeGarthe, a 70 year old artist transformed an outcrop of granite in his backyard into a monument to the fisherman of Peggy’s Cove.  He passed away before he finished the monument ten years later; however, you can’t tell that it wasn’t completed.  The lighthouse (second one) was built in l9l4 by the residents of the community.  People from everywhere come to photograph the lighthouse as well as the crashing waves onto the rocks.  The rocks are great to climb on – you know Bruce and his climbing.

In every village there is a lovely little white church – no exception here.  We walked around the entire town with its shops, cafĂ©’s, restaurants and the small inlet of colorful boats.  Fishermen were out on their boats working.  The top right picture could have been my picture of the day, but I think I did one better.

We all know about the Titanic but didn’t realize that it went down so close to Halifax.  One of their ships (those that lay cables on the bottom of the ocean) was the first to get out to the site to pick up the bodies.  A lot of people were buried at sea but quite a few of them were buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery.  Some families wanted their loved ones sent home.  The story of the unknown baby was very sad.  After many years, they were able to do DNA and finally figured how who the baby was.

In the city we went into another historic garden.  The flowers and grounds were just beautiful.  Top left was another tribute to Queen Elizabeth.

More pictures of the garden.  Small replica of the Titanic floating in a small pond.  Love the reflections in the pools.  Bottom right - Bruce is looking for me - I made a slight detour!!

Went to another Citadel here in Halifax.  This fort’s purpose was to deter an overland assault on the city and dockyard.   Due to the 200th Anniversary of the War of l8l2, the pipers and drummers of the 78th Highlanders perform favorite traditional regimental tunes at various times during the day.  The Old Town clock is one of the most recognizable landmarks of the city.  It began keeping time on October 20, l803 and still works today.

Pictures of Cannons, Bruce behind bars(that's a good place) and a rifle firing demonstration.  Also the tall masts used for sending coded signals to both the citizens of Halifax and other forts that protected the harbor, such as the one on the island.

This is a very busy harbor from pleasure boating, tour boats, cruise and naval ships as well as cargo ships.    In another week, they will have the Parade of Tall Ships here in Halifax.  We were told there would be around l00 ships coming in from all around the world.  What a treat that will be – sorry we won’t get a chance to see it.

They have a great boardwalk that goes along the harbor and it was a beautiful night so we took advantage of it.  There are bands and groups playing music everywhere including a Jazz Festival going on for a week.  Great music so it was hard to leave and return to the campground.

Picture of the Day!!

I tried to make this as brief as possible, but we had a very full day - sorry!  Hope you had a good day as well.
