Day 44 - Baddeck, Nova Scotia

It is Friday the l3th of July and all is well.  We had a long day - not busy - but long as we left via a tour bus at 8 a.m. and returned around 5 p.m.  We toured the Upper Cabot Trail which included the Cape Breton Highlands National Park totalling l83 miles.  We traveled along the Gulf of St. Lawrence as well as the Atlantic Ocean.  Because we went through so many little villages and drove so many miles, most of today will be pictures as I don't remember all the places where the pictures were taken or the names of the villages.   We drifted in and out of the Park several times.

We stopped at Flora's, a gift and ice cream shop, and a lady was doing latch hook.  The project she was working on is only going to take her 4 hours - it would take me probably a week, but then again, she does it all the time.  Latch hook is very big in this area.  This was not a typical tourist trap as they had some very nice items in the store.  We stopped in Che'ticamp and toured a beautiful huge church - nothing that you would expect to see in a small town. Little hard to see, but along the river, we saw a herd of cattle just laying there only feet from the edge.  I guess they were getting their salt lick for the day.  There was also a tribute to the fallen fireman.

As you can see, St.Peter's Church is very large and our tour guide said they only have about 300 Catholic families that attend masses at this church.  This is one of the most beautiful churches in the Maritimes due to its architecture, frescoes and stained glass.   The balcony is full of seats as well.   Paul, our guide, asked if Wayne and Wendy could sing a song for us to prove how good the accoustics is for the age of the church.   They sang  Amazing Grace for us.  Thank you both - you did a great job.

Coastal pictures from the Gulf side.  Beverly and Stuart, Farmers from Williamsburg, Iowa, taking a lovely picture.  I will include pictures of all our new friends throughout the blog.  Bev, Tom and I had fun in the back of the bus jumping from one side of the bus to another to take pictures.  At a lookout overlooking the shores is this monument that reads:   "They will never know the beauty of this place.  See the seasons change, enjoy natures chorus.  All we enjoy we owe to them, men and women who lie buried in the earth of foreign lands and in the seven seas.  Dedicated to the memory of Canadians who died overseas in the service of their country and so preserved our heritage."  Makes us really appreciate where we are today.

At last, the minute we've been waiting for "A Moose" - better yet "Mama and Baby Moose".  I was so ready with my camera as this clearing was around a corner and I thought I would have a good shot of the ocean and instead these are pictures I got - so excited!!!!  At first we only saw the Mama but then she moved and walla!!!  baby makes two.  We actually saw another moose later on but didn't get pictures and the driver couldn't stop.

Our lunch stop was at the Rusty Anchor.  This truck was pulling out of the driveway just as Bruce was walking and the dog had her head and most of her body out of the window so needed to get this picture for Dawn - she won't believe her Dad petting a dog and smiling.  After lunch we walked by the edge of the property and saw the coastline as well as an Eagle flying by.  She was flying away as I took my picture.

Top left: This is our first glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean.  It was hazy so hard to take a clear picture.  We stopped at a fishing village and watched them loading containers of lobsters.  All those boxes in the water were l00# of lobsters - smelled like it too.  All the boats were cleaned up as they are done for the season.

The Keltic Lodge located in Ingonish Beach is a beautiful resort with views of the Cape Smokey Mountains.  Bruce and I walked through it briefly and what a lovely place it is with all sorts of things to do like hiking, biking, golf, playing in the pool or just sitting in a chair and relaxing.

Flowers and more flowers.  Please don't ask me what they are.  The hanging baskets were behind the lodge and the others facing the ocean.

Picture of the Day!!

Bruce took this picture inside St. Peter's Church.

Another day has come and gone.  Hope it was as good for you as it was for us.  Nite now!!
