Day 8 - Old St. Mary's

While still visiting w/Steven and his family, Bruce and I took a trip to Historic St. Mary's City.  It once was the Capital of Maryland. It was a gorgeous day so we did a lot of walking and sightseeing.

There are still archaeology digs being done by students of  St. Mary's College within the grounds of the city.  They are very patient people!  The Maryland Dove is a replica of ships that brought settlers from England.  There are many buildings such as print shops, Smith's Ordinary (similar to a motel), churches, etc.  It was really quite interesting.

We also took a ride out to Lookout Point.  Unfortunately, we couldn't tour the lighthouse.  The Prisoner of War Camp was also on the point and it was absolutely devastating to us all the atrocities that were afflicted onto the prisoners.  Very sad.

I've never seen so many Magnolia Trees and so huge!!  Some of them are just covered w/flowers whereas others only have a few.  There were trees even much larger than this one.
